A startling new study warns that two of America’s most common over-the-counter painkillers, ibuprofen (Advil) and acetaminophen (Tylenol), may have an unexpected role in one of the world’s most urgent public health crises.
The everyday painkillers were found to fuel the superbugs that contribute to antibiotic resistance.
Researchers at the University of South Australia conducted lab tests with E. coli and ciprofloxacin, a common antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections.
They found that ibuprofen and paracetamol (the generic name for Tylenol in Australia) not only drive antibiotic resistance when used individually, but amplify it when used together.
“It is well-known that overuse of antibiotics leads to resistance,” Fox News senior medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel, who was not involved in the study, told Fox News Digital.
It has previously been shown that the use of common pain relievers (NSAIDs) and antidepressants can lead to antibiotic resistance.
In the new research, when E. coli was exposed to ciprofloxacin alongside ibuprofen and paracetamol – both alone and especially when combined – the painkillers significantly increased genetic mutations in the bacteria.
These mutations made E. coli highly resistant to ciprofloxacin and other types of antibiotics.
“Antibiotic resistance isn’t just about antibiotics anymore,” Associate Professor Rietie Venter, the study’s lead author, stated in a press release, highlighting the impact of medications beyond antibiotics.
The study highlights a concern in settings where it’s common to administer multiple medications, like elder care facilities.
Residents often receive combinations of painkillers, sleeping aids, decongestants and other drugs, many of which were included in the study. In this kind of environment, there is a heightened risk of resistant superbugs, experts warn.
The World Health Organization designates antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as one of the top global public health threats.
In 2019, drug-resistant bacteria were directly responsible for 1.27 million deaths and were associated with nearly five million deaths.
If the current trend continues, projections suggest that AMR-related deaths could climb to nearly 40 million over the next 25 years.
“This doesn’t mean we should stop using these medications, but we do need to be more mindful about how they interact with antibiotics — and that includes looking beyond just two-drug combinations,” Venter said in the press release.
In high-risk settings like elder care, healthcare providers may want to re-examine medication schedules and consider safer alternatives, he suggests.
To help curb AMR, experts recommend avoiding unnecessary prescriptions and completing full courses when needed.
Fox News Digital reached out to the makers of Tylenol and Advil for comment.

To bad, i kinda need these painkillers on an almost daily basis. Otherwise i’m unable to do perform my job properly due to a migraine disorder.
“Migraine disorder” that’s A BIG ascension syndrome TELLING much about YOU SIR!🫡🫡
[Do those painkiller work ok?]
Now “you”‘ve made me curious… mind telling what kind of job you’re doing?
Yes, they work somehow. They reduce the pain for at least 4 hours or so. Just last week I woke up every damn day with a migraine. 🤣 So painkillers were mandatory.
As for my job, I work as a pastry cook at a food bank/restaurant. Even the homeless can have their treat. 🤫
Now I am fine, but for 5 years I had serious headaches. The intensity was to the point that I considered suicide. All the specialists said they did not see what was wrong. So, now I almost take no opioid painkillers (the pain just vanished slowly after years), but without them, I would not be here anymore. It was that aweful. It’s always easy to be righteous when one does not know.
Wow Mikhael… I’m not surprised😆😆.. I hear that job explains your migraine👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️!
GLAD that pharmastuff is helpful!!!
Ohhhhhh… I’m sorry to hear that Raksha… FIVE yrs… that’s indeed “AWE ful”😬😬😬
But what means “It’s always easy to be righteous when one does not know”: WHO is saying that to whom?
I’m glad you’re doing better Raksha. It’s hard to think straight when you feel something similar to having a 4 inch nail behind the eye. 🤣
Is it fully gone now? Or you’re still having these headaches now and then?
Thanks for your compassion Klaudia. To answer you, I was not talking to you specifically, but many people in this community say that all doc are evil and all meds are as well. I say, these people don’t know physical pain to that extent.
Notice how I am willing to explain more bluntly when there is a misunderstandig haha. (private joke 🍤)
To Mikhaël : it is almost gone. I have a crisis once a year or something. But for 5 yrs, it was a pain every single say, I could not live normally, then it took 2 yrs to slowly improve, for no particular reasons.
I was still addicted to opioids for years. Now, it’s better, thank you for caring. How long has it been for you ? and do you have a diagnosis ?
In my case, the âis was right in the 3rd eye, and most of all, at the top of the skull. The docs were puzzled because migraines tend to be on one side of the head, they said.
I did IRM, radios, etc, nothing was off. I don’t like either to put it all unto ascension symptoms. Maybe there is some truth in that, but i find it is a bit easy to put it ALL on that.
What was weird, and very discouraging in my case, was that it happened when I decided to improve my life. I used to drink beers, and smoke canabis, a lot, and I decided to stop it all and do some sports (tennis in my case, cause I practiced for ten years).
At first, I was filling great. But one day, after a particulary intense play, I felt weird, started to see blurry, and when I woke up the next day, the pain was here, not to leave me. At that time, I felt it was so unfair. And actually I still don’t get it, that would be one of my first question on the other side…
Lmao that’s odd. It’s sure not really encouraging when it happen after taking better habits. At least it’s going better now.
For my part, i’ve had this migraine disorder since i started elementary school. So for about 25 years by now. It was diagnosed by a specialist at the time because i was missing school a lot. It’s really random, sometimes i’m fine for weeks, then i have these intence headaches (always behind my left eye) for a day, to a week straight. Painkillers usually work, but not always.
LOLLLLL RAKSHA!!!!😆😆😆😆
The last sentence said it all: “YES, you meant _ME_”🙏😆😆🙏… and the next moment you throw in another bombshell😜😜😜… what you said is sooooo hysterically funny… “the other side” is laughing their heads off
YET don’t be mad… they can’t help it!!
But I won’t say more. The last four days have been exhausting enough.😍
Oh, the shrimp joke was indeed for you Klaudia. Not the fisrt part. I am not sure what was so hillarious about what I said, but always my pleasure to make others laugh.
And MiK, I don’t have much to say other than : I empathize.
Ok… “that’s unfair” they’re saying😉but what they MEAN is “WE TOLD YOU SO!!!” (obviously) when planning your incarnation NOT to fall into “THE BIGGEST TRAP” of all… CALLED “EGO”:
☝️☝️☝️”… when I decided to improve my life”: YOU had “YOUR BEST LIFE” figured out “to the maxx” so to speak = “I used to drink beers, and smoke canabis, a lot”.🤷♀️🤷♀️
[Btw. You’ve got to be a VIBRATIONAL match for “the other side” (in order to meet)… just saying.]
So, should I go back to smoking cannabis? I was happier then.
OF COURSE I WOULD!!!!
[C. was A BIG PART of my journey… until 5+ yrs ago when “DIVINE DESIGN” said “now you’ve got to do it on your own”😭😭😭… I’m DREAMING of “CANNABIS” sometimes.]
Well, yes, I received the same inspiration. It was great, but I needed to move on.
These types of messages are a classic type of “bait and switch” scapegoating, where something not so evil (paracetamol/ibuprofen) is switched with something much more evil (several types of antibiotics).
Two very good types of “antibiotics” are garlic (lots of it) and colloidal silver (higher than 500ppm).
